RESEARCH

Our lab focuses on understanding the pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) to prevent or treat the development of colon cancer.

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is subtype of IBD that causes chronic inflammation and ulcers affecting the innermost lining of colon and rectum.

  • Almost 1 million people suffer through UC in the United States alone, with a disease history of 16 years.

  • Notch1 signaling is an evolutionary conserved intercellular signaling pathway that regulates cell fate, cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and cell death.

  • Notch1 can act as a mediator or suppressor depending on the cellular context and disease stage.

Aim of this study is to understand the mechanistic role of Notch1 in UC

Figure 1: A hallmark of inflamed tissue in UC patients is the intestinal epithelial disruption and high expression of Notch will result in absorptive progenitor cells which will differentiate in epithelial cells.

Updates of this project , in a different mice model, were presented at the Experimental Biology Conference 2019 in Orlando FL.

Preliminary data of this project was presented at the Digestive disease week 2017 in Chicago, IL. I received a Poster of distinction award!
